“Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better…”

America is losing its manhood. Not in a battle-of-the-sexes scenario, but this nation is losing the grit which made it great. Embroiled in political correctness and “everybody is a winner” fever, our society is consequently breeding mediocrity.

It may be true that all men were created equal, but that’s where the similarities end. After we factor in the intrinsic value of human existence, we must begin to classify people. Individuals have strengths, they have weaknesses, and this is a good thing. Early in the growing process, there is every growing need to find communalities between children rather than cultivating a child or student to recognize our own innate differences and to distinguish such talents which stem from this peculiarity. Unfortunately, when we overlook our own uniqueness, mediocrity tends to be tolerated, even celebrated.

Do you think there were 8th place ribbons back in the 1850s? Were there trophies for just showing up during the 1920s? When did we start acknowledging anything other than greatness? Why are the SATs scored out of 2400, not 1600? The College Board will give you an explanation, but I opine that they didn’t want students who failed to break 1000 to feel bad. Unfortunately, some people are smarter than others. That’s perfectly normal. I’m not smart enough to be a rocket scientist and I am the first to admit it. It doesn’t benefit me for society to coddle me and tell me that I can be something that I just can’t.

I hate the phrase, “you can do anything that you put your mind to.” It’s a good motivational tool, but it’s load of crap. It should read “if you thoroughly apply yourself, you can do anything, up to, but never beyond your maximum personal potential (which may or may not be good enough).” That’s better. Let’s find out what people excel in and develop those talents instead of make everyone feel equal. We are not all equals.
